Now for something kind of different, and a break from Flip's style:
Here's a report from Captain Casey Doyle, USMC:
29 March Split Operations today:
Pat, Casey, and Joe:
- Visited Lori Colin at Coral Reef and acquired a home and cell
number for Ms. Etsuko Seid. Ms. Seid is
Japanese.
Her Grandfather was stationed on Saipan and did not survive the
war. P-MAN XV is interested in contacting her for an interview.
- Contacted Ms. Seid via phone. It is her birthday today, so we will
meet with her on Monday, 1 Apr for an interview. We will need to
call her on
Monday on
her cell in order to set up the time.
- Visited Bureau of Arts and Culture in order to speak with
Sylvia Kloulubak. She is sick today. We need to return to BAC on Monday,
1 Apr
in order to speak
with
her.
- Obtained Chief Reklai’s home phone. He is
in a meeting in Koror this morning. Need to call him back this afternoon
to set a
time for BentProp to
visit him and ask him to put the word out to his part of Babledaob
that we are searching for information on RT#3.
- Contacted the Palauan National Hospital to set a time with
Dr. Tenny for us to come by and see the recompression chamber on island.
He is unavailable
at
this time,
but we set meeting to go see him at 1500 today.
- Obtained a second phone for the duration of P-MAN XV.
- Obtained supplies at Ben Franklin and Surangel’s.
Dan:
- Reviewed Scrips’ data document dump.
Flip:
- Flip has a bum left knee that keeps bothering him. Pat thinks it might
be a muscle pull, but not sure.
- Flip went with the Stockbridge students to use their "Dingar"
ROV on the large half-shipwreck found on 27 March on the SW side of Malakal
harbor,
then the 84-ft hole in
the cove on the N side of Malakal harbor.

- Derek spent the morning writing a paper on Amphibious Operations for
Command and Staff.

Okay, back to Flip's commentary.
After the day's adventures for each
of us, we gathered at Drop Off (at Neco Marine) for
a debrief with Stockbridge. The bottom line is the students did great
today. The ROV worked great and they are no longer imaging the ocean
bottom half
a world away from home. They are exploring the ocean bottom and discovering
what lurks beneath the waves. They found a bucket, a piece of an anchor
and something large that might be manmade. They are reviewing the video
tonight to decide if a diver should be sent down to look.

Flip didn't get the memo to bring his hat, or
stand square to the camera, or not to slouch.
Tomorrow, the students will be given a specific lat/long that is associated
with a sonar return. Today, they were doing an area search just to see
what was there. The towed camera array is the better tool for that, but
it is down due to problems with the cameras. The controllable ROV just
isn't the right tool for wide area searches. But it is perfect to go
down on a point target. And due to the help we've been getting from Scripps,
we have plenty of point targets to dive on.
For dinner, we went to Kraemer's for wings. Pretty low key tonight. Tried
to watch a movie back at the ready room, but everyone left after the crash
scene. I guess that's all any of us wanted to see.
