P-MAN XII Progress Report #11 - Hikes & hitchhikers.
01 March 2010

I'd like to say that a lot of great things happened today. However, the only great thing is we got a great walk in the jungle. Didn't see hide nor hair of an airplane. We did find something man-made that is modern: a Japanese communications device. And maybe some more ancient Palauan rock things.

Japanese Communications Device.

Maybe ancient Palauan rock things.

Paul is putting together a great search plan. He is methodically having us hike up and down hills making sure we cover this particular terrain carefully. To date, we have searched 31 acres of jungle. Paul also says that is only 50% of his target for this year. I think we'll have some more jungle days for sure.

We got out of the jungle pretty whipped today. It was very quiet in the van coming home. And then I got a surprise when I was showering off the jungle. Seems like the world's largest tick decided to hitch a ride to Koror on me. And he was one tough bugger. Soaked him in alcohol. He did not release. Soaked him in hydrogen peroxide, he did not release. Soaked him in Joy dishwashing liquid. He did not release. Soaked him in DEET (Which should have kept him away if I had used any today). He did not release.

So between Mike (Now named Fruit Cup for his excellent choice of providing post jungle snacks.) and Pat, they surgically removed said tick and Mike ground him up in the kitchen disposal. After 54 years, 302 days on this planet, I got my first tick. Sorry, no photos. But Pat says I will live.

[File photo inserted by Reid for dramatic effect only. This is not Flip's tick.
Flip's tick was probably MUCH bigger than this. - Reid]

Out to dinner at a Filipino restaurant which was marvelous. A bit of shopping for food stuffs and now back logging all this activity.

Tomorrow, we head to Peleliu to promote Captain Warren Bruce, USMC, to Major. Now, that will be something great to report on.

The soon to be former Captain Warren Bruce, U.S. Marine Corps.
