P-MAN X Update #15 - Police Hill and a ton of other stuff
06 March 2008 - Thursday

From the outside, today's activities probably looked like a fire drill. But we knew what we were doing. Really.

We headed out from our digs. Picked up Joe. Pat dropped off a report at the Historical Preservation Office. Gassed up the car. Tried to find a witness to interview who had been recommended to us by JPAC's Rich Wills, but couldn't find his house. Went to the airport so Flip could drop off some documentation to go along with his application for a Palauan pilot's license. Stopped by the Civic Action Team's compound, where they lent us a couple of rakes. Went down the road so Max, the Assistant OIC of the CAT could show us a crash site that we hadn't heard of before - it appears to be a Japanese Betty bomber, possibly an operational loss when the Japanese were operating out of what is presently the airport on Babelthuap. This crash site is only a stone's throw from the runway. Headed up to Police Hill in Ngatpang.

At Police Hill, our objective was to familiarize Laura with the area, and see what kinds of hypotheses she might generate, having seen maps, photos, and war-crimes tribunal transcripts. We did that - gave her the grand tour. We also briefly showed her the upper area of another candidate site on the other side of the hill.

Headed back toward town. Stopped to see if we could catch Simeon, whom we've been trying to track down for several days. Managed to catch him at home. Made a date to go check a site with him next Monday. Stopped by the Airai State office. Got information we'll need to obtain a permit to explore the site (actually two, we later learned) that we learned about today from Max. Headed back to the CAT to return the borrowed rakes. Stopped at the store to pick up some breakfast & lunch supplies. Dropped Joe off at home. Headed back to the digs. Showered. Hustled over to Sam's for dinner, where they showed Last Flight Home and gave Pat an opportunity to answer questions afterward.

Now we're back at the room again, and I'm goin' to bed.
